You enter a few details about your situation — which state you're in, whether your divorce is contested or uncontested, whether children and assets are involved — and the calculator gives you a realistic cost estimate based on actual court filing fees, typical attorney hourly rates, and mediation costs for your state.
Nothing is sent to any server. All calculations happen entirely in your browser. We don't collect your data, we don't require an account, and we don't sell anything.
I spend a lot of time in personal finance and legal-advice communities, and one pattern kept showing up: person after person asking the same basic questions — how much a divorce actually costs, whether they need a lawyer, what the difference between contested and uncontested even means. The answers people got back were almost always vague ("it depends") or came from someone trying to get them to call a law firm.
I built DivorceCostBreakdown because I wanted there to be one free place where someone could put in a few real details about their situation and get an actual number — or at least a realistic range — instead of a shrug or a sales pitch. Not to replace a lawyer, but so someone can walk into that first consultation already knowing roughly what to expect and what questions to ask.

The estimates are intentionally shown as ranges rather than single numbers, because actual cost depends heavily on how smoothly negotiations go and how much attorney time is ultimately required. The low end assumes minimal conflict. The high end assumes things get complicated. I review and update the underlying figures periodically, but state fees and typical rates do change, so treat this as a starting estimate rather than a final number.
